About Five Bridges Wilderness Area

Located in southern Arizona within the Coronado National Forest, the Five Bridges Wilderness Area encompasses approximately 22,500 acres of pristine Sonoran Desert ecosystem. This federally designated wilderness area features rugged, rocky terrain with remarkable geological features, including natural stone arches and dramatic canyons. Elevations range from about 3,000 to 4,500 feet, creating diverse habitats that support a range of desert-adapted plants and wildlife such as saguaro cacti, ocotillo, desert bighorn sheep, and various raptors. The area is historically significant as it holds traces of Native American presence, as well as being part of old cattle grazing lands before its wilderness designation in 1990. The Five Bridges Wilderness offers exceptional hiking opportunities along non-motorized routes, with scenic views of canyons, natural bridges, and the surrounding desert expanse. Visitors can explore several small canyons and rock formations, making it attractive to hikers, wildlife watchers, and geology enthusiasts. The wilderness lacks developed facilities, emphasizing a primitive experience that appeals to solitude seekers and those looking for a rugged backcountry adventure. Accessibility is through unpaved forest roads, requiring moderate to high-clearance vehicles. The area’s remoteness and minimal visitor impact promote quiet enjoyment and natural soundscapes. Wildlife observation, photography, and technical rock scrambling are popular activities. While relatively unknown compared to Arizona’s larger wilderness areas, Five Bridges offers a unique desert wilderness experience away from crowds and strong opportunities to witness native flora and fauna undisturbed.
